Jennifer Montes de Oca is an interdisciplinary artist, proudly representing the vibrant Cuban-American heritage, rooted in the lush swamplands of Miami, Florida. Her current residence spans the dynamic landscapes of both Miami and Los Angeles, providing a unique geographical backdrop that serves as a bridge between humid and arid climates. This juxtaposition leads to a feedback loop of self-reflection, bridging the realms of meaning and influence between her childhood memories in Florida and Cuba.
Montes de Oca's artistic practice revolves around themes of motherland, dreams, memory, decay, place, identity, belonging, thresholds, and home. She navigates these themes with an array of mediums, ranging from video, film, photography, collage, projection, installations, sculpture, and performance. Observing the delicate details and balance between perceived reality and the natural world's temporal decay and rebirth cycle, which is vividly exemplified in the life of orchids.
Montes de Oca's art delves into the narratives of immigrant homes, striving to unearth and amplify the often-overlooked voices that lie within these stories.
Jennifer Montes de Oca traverses the thresholds of a profound exploration of the intricate connections between memory, liminal spaces, and belonging. Pursing a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts at ArtCenter College of Design, all while actively practicing as an artist and set designer. She has showcased her work in various settings, including a solo exhibit titled "The Internet’s Dollhouse," as well as group exhibitions like "Severed" and the album release party for Yeek's "Future Reference."
